*Figures trace to Intel's second-quarter 2026 earnings release, filed July 23,
2026 as Exhibit 99.1 (accession `0000050863-26-000155`), with the company's
own Q2 guidance from the April 23 first-quarter release (accession
`0000050863-26-000077`), both indexed and retrieved via Aether. Research, not

Three months ago, [Intel](https://evidinvest.com/valuation/INTC) (**[$INTC](https://evidinvest.com/valuation/INTC)**)
guided Q2 to $13.8–14.8 billion of revenue, a 37.5 percent GAAP gross margin
and $0.08 of GAAP EPS. Last night it reported **$16.1 billion** — $1.3 billion
above the *top* of its own range, up 25 percent year-over-year, which CEO
Lip-Bu Tan calls Intel's "strongest revenue growth in more than fifteen
years." Gross margin came in at **40.4 percent GAAP**, nearly three points
above guide and up from 27.5 percent a year ago.

And the same release shows a **GAAP net loss of $11.0 billion**. If you read
only headlines, those two facts cannot coexist. In the filing, they reconcile
in one line item — and it is one of the strangest line items in large-cap
America right now.

## The quarter, against their own guide

Every operating line beat. Revenue $16.1B versus a $14.3B guide midpoint.
GAAP gross margin 40.4 percent versus 37.5 guided; non-GAAP 41.8 versus 39.0.
Non-GAAP EPS **$0.42 — more than double the $0.20 guide**. Operating expenses
actually fell 6 percent. CFO Dave Zinsner attributes the upside to "higher
factory yields and improved cycle times" — volume, not price.

The segment table is the real story. **Data Center and AI revenue rose 59
percent to $6.3 billion** and produced **$2,474 million of operating income —
now more profitable than the client business** ($2,343 million on $8.9
billion of revenue, up 13 percent). Intel Foundry grew 31 percent to $5.8
billion with its operating loss narrowing to **$2.1 billion from $3.2 billion**
a year ago. The quarter also carried the launch of **Xeon 6+, Intel's first
server-class product on Intel 18A** — the node the whole turnaround thesis
rests on — plus rack-scale inference systems built with SambaNova, Foxconn
and NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs.

Cash generation matched the print: **$7.0 billion of operating cash flow** in
the quarter, with quarter-end cash at $13.6 billion.

## The $12.5 billion line

So where does an $11 billion loss come from? The reconciliation table gives
the answer in full: a **$12,529 million non-cash mark-to-market loss on
"Escrowed Shares."** The release's own footnote defines them: shares of Intel
common stock **held in escrow to be released to the U.S. Department of
Commerce** as Intel performs under its CHIPS Act Secure Enclave agreement
with the U.S. Government.

The mechanics are almost ironic: as Intel's stock rises, the escrowed shares
promised to the government become more valuable — and accounting rules force
Intel to book that appreciation as a loss. The better the turnaround goes,
the bigger this paper charge gets. It consumed $2.45 of EPS this quarter;
excluding it and other non-cash items, non-GAAP net income was **positive
$2.2 billion** versus a $441 million loss a year ago.

## The guide, raised again

Intel guided Q3 to **$15.8–16.8 billion of revenue** — the midpoint above
this quarter's record print — with GAAP gross margin stepping up again to 41
percent (42 non-GAAP) and *positive* GAAP EPS of $0.31. Zinsner says the
company is "meaningfully increasing our investments in equipment, clean room
space, and substrates" to support growth "this year and next across products
and foundry."

## How to read it

Strip the escrow artifact and this is the cleanest quarter Intel has filed in
years: revenue beating its own guide at every line, the data-center business
out-earning the client business for the first time in the disclosure, foundry
losses narrowing while its first 18A server part ships, and $7 billion of
operating cash. What remains unproven is the same thing as last quarter —
whether Foundry's $2.1 billion quarterly loss closes fast enough to justify
the capex Zinsner just promised to increase. That answer will arrive in
future filings; the direction of travel, this quarter, was filed in Intel's
favor.
